You went to the doctor's office and found out you have an abnormal lab, maybe you put on extra weight (or maybe your weight doubled from last year-yikes!), or maybe you are having issues with hormones or digestive health. Whatever it is, your doctor wants to refer to a dietitian. You have a million questions and a million reasons not to do the appointment, right? Maybe it’s a fear of healthy eating and change, you don’t want to give up your favorite foods, or you think the dietitian is going to tell you to eat nothing but spinach and water! Let's take your fears away and tell you a little about what seeing a dietitian is like and what you can expect at your first appointment with JMH Nutrition Consulting.
First, the type of nutrition education you get from a private practice dietitian is completely different. Its more than giving you a piece of paper with a premade menu and some generic education. It is personalized and customizable to meet each clients’ needs, budget and lifestyle.
During your first appointment with me, I will complete an initial nutrition assessment. This assessment will include questions that allow me to get to know you. You can expect questions about food preferences, a 24-hour food recall, food allergies (if present), food intolerances/GI issues, current body weight, past weight loss experiences, types of diets tried, and even your work hours/schedule. After the assessment is completed, I can now take the collected information and start a treatment plan. The treatment plan will include measurable goals set by you, an action plan, a nutrition prescription (which will be useful for meal planning in future visits) and food logging criteria moving forward. You'll also gain access to a food logging app free of charge while you are an active client. Food logging will allow me to run nutrient analysis and adjust goals as needed for the next appointment. At the end of your initial appointment, we'll set up a date and time for your follow-up visit. The initial appointment lays the groundwork for your treatment plan, and follow ups are intended to monitor and adjust as we work you towards your end goal. When you book with insurance, one of my schedulers will reach out to you (usually within 2-3 business days) to go over things with you and confirm your appointment. You will also want to reach out to your insurance provider to confirm what your covered benefit is for telehealth nutrition counseling.
